Wolfhill back on top
Tuesday March 02 2010
Wolfhill Athletic 4 Nurney Villa 1: Two goals in seven minutes set the tone for Wolfhill's victory to regain pole position of the Seniors Division. This was a dream start for the home team with them opening the scoring after only two minutes of play.
Using the wind on their backs along with the downhill slope of the pitch, saw them create a good run down the wing followed by excellent one two play, Kevin Kealy volleyed home to make it 1-0.
Continuing with their attacking format, Damian McMahon was a handful for the Villa defenders. They doubled their advantage on seven minutes, a goal by Christ McMahon.
It was still all Wolfhill and on 27 minutes from a very acute angle, Liam Sunderland headed home for a 3-0 lead for Wolfhill.
Nurney improved in the second half, however Wolfhill never gave up the chase either. Villa's Denis Bermingham had a header and a shot well saved by the Athletic keeper to deny his side the chance to reduce the arrears.
Then Wolfhill's Charlie Dunne was fouled in the area and from the resulting spot kick, Dave Carthy made it 4-0. Comfortable with a four goal advantage the home side seemed to ease off the pedal and late in the game Villa scored a consolation goal, Paul Dermody from a very acute angle to make the final score line 4-1.
Excellent for Wolfhill Athletic were Pa Murphy, Damian McMahon and Liam Sunderland. Best players for Nurney villa were David and Paul Dermody and Denis Bermingham.
