Impressive Killeshin show their class
Tuesday February 23 2010
WITH QUALITY players in the squad, Killeshin has eventually shown their strength going top gaining thirteen points from last five games. For most of the game Killeshin dominated and were 3-0 up by half time with Eugene O'Rourke scoring a hat trick. The first goal was a penalty when Colm Fitzgerald was fouled on ten minutes. Then on 19 minutes, O'Rourke lobbed the Thomastown goalkeeper with a long range shot.
He finished the first half scoring on 32 minutes with a shot from the edge of the box.
The second half saw Killeshin dominate the exchanges again. They went 4-0 ahead on 55 minutes, Fergus Nolan scoring with a header from a John O'Neill cross. Five minutes later James Hennigan made it 5-0. Thomastown got a late consolation goal, Evan Butler the scorer to make it 5-1 on the final whistle.
New Oak Boys 3 St. Fiacc's 0
SHARING the points the previous week, New Oak got back on track with a somewhat easy victory on Sunday.
Fiacc's started the match well, J. J. Hurley broke through the new oak defence only to have his shot well saved by Mick Byrne for the Boys.
Distracted by Hurley's attempt, New Oak took the lead when Kieran Shield on the left, crossed the ball into the box for Gary Walsh to blast home on four minutes.
On 17 minutes, the Boys doubled their advantage, a ball over the top from midfield by Ivor Bowes saw Walsh break the off side trap for his second goal. Then with three minutes of the half remaining a great run down the left by Joe Redmond to the bye line, pulled back and crossed for Walsh to secure his hat trick from 18 yards.
Fiacc's upped their game in the second half and performed well forcing Mick Byrne into another good save but the damage was done and the Boys coasted to victory with the best chance falling to Shields but he headed over.
Gary Walsh up front, Joe O'Shea at midfield and Kieran Shields were impressive for New Oak Boys. Best players for St. Fiacc's were Wayne Murphy, Peter Dorgan, J. J. Hurley and Aidan Power
Nurney Villa 1 Stradbally Town
IN AN evenly contested encounter, a fair result saw the side's share the points.
Stradbally started the better, however their was little action in the first ten minutes. From a Stradbally free kick on the left the Villa goalkeeper, Pat Pollard seemed to misjudge the bounce and the ball went over his head for a Town goal.
Stradbally had a great opportunity of doubling their advantage, from a Gary Lawler corner Paddy Whelan from just six yards put his header over. Anthony Hitchcock then got in on the act for Town forcing an excellent save from Villa's Pollard just before the break
Nurney applied the pressure in the second having the advantage of the sloping terrain. John Townsend Snr. had a shot blocked by a Stradbally defender. They made the breakthrough equalising on 55 minutes.
David Dermody was fouled in the area and Vincent Murphy put the spot kick away. Town got back into the game, Éamon Dunne put in a great cross only for Whelan to miss again with a header. Paul Murphy was very unlucky not to have scored for Nurney in the dying moments when his powerful shot cracked off the crossbar to safety.
Derry O'Toole, David Dermody and Paul Murphy impressed for Nurney Villa. Best players for Stradbally Town were John Larkin, Gerry Maher and Paul Colton.
