Deadlock between old rivals Wolfhill and New Oak Boys
Wolfhill Athletic 1 New Oak Boys 1: THIS WAS a typical game between the two teams that have dominated the division for the past few seasons. Just after only five minutes of play, New Oak went on the attack, a great run and shot by Ivor Bowe was just over the top.
The Boys were making most of been on top and a shot form Gary Walsh hit the top of the crossbar and to safety.
On 20 minutes, a free kick from Walsh found Kieran Shields at the back post to volley home for the lead. Wolfhill then upped their game defending more vigorously and creating some openings and chances but the Boys goalkeeper brought off one or two good saves. At the end of the first half a great run by Tony O'Reilly for New Oak saw him shoot just the wrong side of the post to leave the score line remaining 1-0 in their favour at the break.
Second half again Wolfhill applied the pressure with Dave Carthy going close with a shot from the edge of the box. At the other end, Tony O'Reilly had a shot just off target twelve minutes in.
On 20 minutes however, Wolfhill equalised, a Dave Carthy corner ball was powerfully headed home by Damian McMahon.
St. Fiacc's 1 Thomastown United 2
ANOTHER good display by Thomastown sees them just four points behind the league leaders, Wolfhill.
However, they found their opponents stiffer than they expected. Having failed to secure a win this season Fiacc's approached this game with great confidence and took the lead after only five minutes of play. A well-taken corner by J. J. Hurley found Aiden Power to head home from about ten yards out. Thomastown slowly got into the game and eventually got back in and following sloppy defending by the Fiacc's Dave Power equalised. The game developed into a real battle with neither side giving way until bad defending saw Thomastown score their second when the ball broke to Pat O'Neill and he fired home past the Fiacc's goalkeeper, Derek Hovenden.
The second half saw chances for both sides but after constant pressure, Fiacc's were unable to claw their way back into the game.
