Carlow Rovers in total control
Tuesday September 07 2010
REVAMPED Rovers took full points in their first match at home on Sunday.
The game was a very even contest in the first half with both defenses dominating giving away very few chances. Parkville had the best chance in the half when on 35 minutes a cross from the left wing was met with a firm header from eight yards by Jack Teehan but the ever young village 'keeper Dermot Ingram somehow got his fingertips to it at full stretch and pushed it around the post. This was one of the Rovers keeper best saves ever and the highlight of a tight first half.
Rovers came out the hungrier in the second half and raised the tempo of their play from the whistle. Their midfield began to boss the game and gain valuable possession. They got their rewards on 55 minutes when a Shane Mahon cross was finished to the net by Jamie Hanley. Parkville were unable to respond and their defense was now coming under a lot of pressure due to the Rovers midfield now dominating. Rovers doubled their lead shortly following a superb individual goal from Kevin McLaughlin, a 20 yard screamer found the top corner. Rovers continued to press and on 70 minutes got their third goal, a David Kenny cross was buried by Paul Stynes. Parkville broke from defense and had an opportunity to reduce the arrears when the Rovers keeper saved Darren McGrath's running shot. On 80 minutes, the game was over as a contest when Rovers got a fourth goal, Wesley Shirley crossing to Jamie Hanley who got his second of the game. Parkville kept going to the end and got a consolation goal on 85 minutes, from a Keith Sly corner kick, Stephen Deery reduced the arrears. Rovers took a well deserved three points with a dominating second half performance

Nurney Villa 1 St. Anne's FC 0
THIS was the first outing of the new season for both teams, with Nurney having a narrow victory over St. Anne's.
Villa had a good first quarter with Joe Byrne missing from close range and also Shane Brennan failing to net. The Saints settled during the second quarter leaving it a more evenly contested, however the half ended scoreless.
St. Anne's continued to have the better of the game but faile to open the scoring with Villa defending well. Then on 86 minutes when it looked as if the points would be shared, Shane Hickey on a great run on the right wing crossed in for substitutes David Fitzpatrick to finish to the back of the Saints net from the edge of the six-yard box. With the bit between their teeth, Villa went in search of the killer goal and were very unlucky when Hickey hit the upright.
Gary Phelan, Alan Quin, Joe Byrne and Shane Hickey had excellent performances for Nurney.
Village FC 2 Rathanna FC 0
WITH a first win under Village FC's belt it was a good game all round for both teams but Village started the better.
Just two minutes into the game a great right foot from David Dowling put Village a goal up, Rathanna's Chris Coleman under pressure tried to pass the ball back to their keeper, John McKeever, however Dowling intercepted the pass. Rathanna nearly take the equaliser but stopped in their tracks by good defending, a cross from Ger O'Brien for Rathanna found Jesse Foley but under pressure, he sent his attempt narrowly wide. On 20 minutes, Brian Walsh broke through for the visitors and his attempt was also just wide of the upright. Damian Whitford was introduced off the Rathanna bench and this gave the mid field area a lift. Graham O'Neill broke from midfield, forcing a good save from the Village keeper. However, the half ended with Village leading 10.
On 58 minutes, a Paddy Deevy free kick for the Village landed on the head of Paddy Dowling and straight into the back of the Rathanna net to make it 2-0. Village had many more great chances from throws but did not take advantage of them. Into the late stages of the game Rathanna had a great chance from a Michael Doran free kick but could not break through the solid wall of the Village defence. In the dying stages of a great battle, Michael Glendon put great pressure on Rathanna's keeper, McKeever, but sent the ball over the crossbar.
Denis McGrath, Gáróid Foley, Paddy Deevy, Paddy Dowling and Paddy Foley stood out from an over all good team effort from the Village players. Best players for Rathanna were Jesse Foley, Brian Walsh, John Phelan and Ger Foley.
