Baltinglass battle for point

Tuesday September 07 2010

VISITING TEAM Killeshin will be wondering how they did not come away with the three points from this game after leading three times.

A well executed throw by Barry Costello was deflected into the Baltinglass net to put Killeshin ahead on eight minutes. This lead was short lived as Baltinglass improved with Mark Grennan providing for Mickey English to equalise on 14 minutes. A great run by Kevin Redmond ended with across to the far post where Mickey English headed over. During the course of the following exchanges, Killeshin lost their goalkeeper due to injury and this forced some changes, which worked in their favour as they took command of the midfield exchanges. Killeshin's Paddy McDonald fired a shot to the Baltinglass net leaving the visitors ahead at half time.

Soon after the resumption Boy's Mickey English released Anthony Gately to fire in a cross, which took a deflection before ending up in the Killeshin net to balance the scores on 58 minutes. With both teams fighting for control in the middle of the field it was the introduction of Owen Farrell that gave the advantage to Killeshin by causing all sorts of problems for the Baltinglass defence before he latched onto a great pass from Michael McCartney and put a great shot beyond the advancing keeper to put ahead once more.

However, this Baltinglass outfit is resilient and Paddy Sinnott served up a fine pass to Mickey English to equalise just before the final whistle.

Hanover Harps 4 Derry Rovers 3

HANOVER'S slick passing game had the Derry defence in trouble right from the start.

They took the lead through Antony McGrath who made the most of a good pass from P J Brennan. On the half hour mark things got a whole lot worse for Derry when Jonathan Waters scored. Derry's response began to pick holes in a less than attentive Hanover backline, which failed to pick up Enda Brennan who cracked a fine shot to the Hanover net on 37 minutes. This score put wind in Derry's sails but the Hanover defence held firm for the remainder of the half.

Now playing with the wind Derry quickly proved to be a very different proposition with Eddie O'Leary going on a tour through the Hanover defence before releasing to Paul Nolan to equalise. Hanover were later reduced in numbers but a brace of defensive errors capitalised on by Hanover's Jeff Abbot and Antony McGrath ensured that Hanover secured the points.

St. Fiacc's FC 3 Hacketstown United 1

FIACC'S enjoyed the better of the earlier exchanges and having created chances Tony Walsh and Lee Salter agonised as they were denied certain scores by the impressive Christopher Smith in goal for Hacketstown.

However, Fiacc's patience was finally rewarded when Tony Walsh released Lee Salter who put Matt Power through to score on 40 minutes.

The Hacketstown defense remained resolute despite some fine attacking play by the home side but Fiacc's doubled their lead in style when Lee Salter combined with Bobby Dowling, to put Matt Power through in for his second on 60 minutes. A lightening quick break from defense by Hacketstown split the home defense with Colm Murphy setting up Jamie Walsh to reduce the arrears on 70 minutes.

However, whatever hope the visitors had was quenched when dynamic duo Lee Salter and Matt Power combined again to put Shane Condron, through to score the decisive factor and reward the earlier efforts of Tony Walsh, Matt Power, Stephen Maguire and Lee Salter. Best for Hacketstown were Jamie Walsh, Mark Joyce and Stephen Hinchy.

Stretford United 0 Grange FC 10

STRETFORD really had no antidote to the efforts of Grange's midfield architects Peter Cleere and Joseph Arguetta who set up Paddy Byrne who shot wide as early as four minutes into the game.

With Richard Powell making a number of important interventions and saves to deny Niall and Paddy Byrne during the following exchanges it began to look like United would work themselves into the game. However, once Joseph Arguetta put Grange ahead and this was quickly added to by Niall Byrne's strike from close range there was only one outcome likely. United's Garry Doody and Anthony Friel were capable of upsetting the Grange defense and they went closest to reducing the arrears before half time.

Playing with the wind Grange were on top in all sectors and they served notice on Stretford when Paddy O'Keefe climbed highest to deflect a Joseph Arguetta corner onto the bar. United defended in numbers but scores followed through Niall Byrne (2), Christian Arguetta, David Cleere (3), Gavin Lawler, and Paddy Byrne (2). Most impressive for an overworked Stretford
