Tullow exit cup

Tuesday March 02 2010

TULLOW EXITED the Provincial Second's Cup when pipped at home by their Laois rivals on Sunday.

Unsettled since Christmas, and after a great league run the previous season, they lacked the harmony to go through, and not even John Metcalfe's final conversion attempt could have justified a home win.

Tullow scored through a Jeff Deering try, goaled by Metcalfe, with the out-half adding a penalty. Rory Nevin closed the gap late in the second half with Metcalfe narrowly wide with the goal kick.

To play Coolmine in an insignificant match next week, Tullow fielded Derek Vance Robert Davies Shane Reilly Gavin Doyle Rory Nevin John Metcalfe Andy Phelan Jim Bob Leonard Sam Corrigan Richard Kidd David Kelly Dylan Thomas Donal Haskins Kyle Handbridge James Kearney. Reps: David Kidd Jeff Deering Collie Moran David Moran.

* Tullow women lost 13-15 to Garda with good performances from Marie Murphy Marie Kelly Helen O'Brien and the Calbeck sisters to the fore.

* Tullow reached the Gale Cup quarter final (against New Ross) when defeating Kilkenny on Saturday. They scored tries through Paddy Tobin, Stephen Smith (2) Paddy McCall and Bobby Henderson tries, with Paul Canavan posting the remaining points.

* Tullow have drawn holders Boyne in the Towns Cup second round at Black Gates on March 14. The clubs met two years ago when Tullow triumphed in the opening round en route to their first ever final (losing to Navan) but last year, after eliminating Naas, the Co. Carlow club perished 14-6 in Drogheda. Missing this year will be the influential Ronan Bolger who is now with Clontarf.
