Co. Carlow beat Birr in trial game

NEW COACh John Burns got his first look at his new charges when Co. Carlow defeated Birr in a trial game at Oak Park on Saturday by 35-0.
Peter Cassidy ran in a hat-trick of tries while Nevin Kelly Joe Gorman Tommy Ratahi and Fergal Doyle completed the seven. All conversions were missed.
It as a lively exercise in which skipper John Joe Waddock, No. 8 Stuart Holland, Ratahi who turned over a lot of ground ball, David Barron at 9, John Whyte, Ian Pearson, newcomer 6' 3" centre Greg Stanley and replacement Tom Bailey showed promising form.
Co. Carlow host Monkstown on Saturday at 3pm before facing South East League fixtures against Gorey in Carlow on September 2, home to New Ross on September 12 and away to Wicklow on October 3. They open their Leinster League Division 1B campaign at home to Coolmine on September 18.
