Carlow U17s reach SE league semi final

LEADING 10-3 at the break, Co. Carlow 17s qualified for the South East League semi-final in New Ross on Saturday.

Thomas Daly opened with a penalty and after the hosts drew level and they went ahead again with a try by Jeff McDermott which Daly converted.

Ronan O'Brien added a block-down try to complete their scoring with 'Ross having the last say but Carlow held on with Hugh Fraser Harry Hennessy and McDermott setting the standard.

The team plays Kilkenny in the cup on March 20 in Carlow.

Edenderry 9 Co. Carlow 33

CO. CARLOW J2 team can clinch the South Leinster League should they defeat Portlaoise in the decisive match at Oak Park on Sunday next. They are second behind the Laois club but with a game in hand.

They led 13-6 in Edenderry with a try by Chris Bolger in the corner after good pack work, and full-back Tom Bolger made good use of an overlap to add a second five pointer, with Chris Bolger landing a penalty.

Stuart O'Malley cross early in the second half with Bolger converting and adding penalties, and Donal Carbery closing the visitors account with a smart try when he broke from a scrum on the 22 to score under the posts.

Niall Ardill Damien Murphy Barry Murphy Carbery and O'Malley were the Co. Carlow pace-setters.

* Tullow seconds, out of the cup when defeated by Portarlington lost 8-15 to Coolmine with a try by Conor Doyle and a penalty by Aaron Deering and with Mark Coady again filling in.

* Tullow 15s drew with Portlaoise on Saturday to qualify for the South Leinster semifinal on points difference.
