THIS WAS not even a good training session for Kildavin-Clonegal in Dr. Cullen Park on Saturday; the most one-sided SFC match so far and surprising in how the Tullow team had pressed Kilbride in their opening round, losing by only a point. The result propelled the southerners into serious championship contention if only for their draw with Rathvilly in the opening round and their performance on Saturday even if the Tullow challenge did not amount to much.

THOUGH he holds a special place in Carlow's Gaelic football history Kevin Maher has, for over 70 years now, been confined to the role of unsung hero. Indeed until news broke that Carlow IT were hosting the 2008 Sigerson Cup the said Mr Maher hadn't even a Christian name?! All we knew, from a study of the indepth Third Level GAA records, lovingly compiled by Cormac McAnnallan's brother, was that a K Maher, who won a Sigerson Cup medal with UCD in 1935, was the only native of Ireland's second smallest county to have pocketed a coveted Sigerson memento.

THERE WAS plenty of action in the recent Carrick on Suir Hillclimb; Carlow Car Club members dominated the event on both days with some outstanding driving which lead to nail biting overall and class battles between the members. First up was the Saturday hill which was located in Piltown, drivers were greeted that morning with torrential rain which continued throughout the day nonetheless this did not deter them as they set about their main objective, getting to the top of the hill in record time.

SO, WE have begun the business end of the domestic football season, and not with any particular pizzazz. Indeed, with the exception of the injection of Blues character, there would have been more action in bouncing castles in the opening flurry of matches. CARLOW U-18 Camogie team continued their winning way in the second round of the All Ireland Minor Camogie Championship at Deerpark (O'Hanrahans GFC) on Wednesday last. The game was in the balance right up to the final whistle as Meath dominated in the closing minutes and but for a sterling performance by the Carlow backs might have stole the game. A late goal won the match for Carlow. They now travel to play Kildare on Wednesday for round 3.

CARLOW U-18 Camogie team made the long journey to Drogheda for the first round of the All Ireland Minor Camogie Championship on Wednesday last. It proved to be a fruitful trip in that the visitors won the match but told the management team of Liam Dunne, Jack Barcoe, Brendan Kehoe and Valerie Crean little of the strength of character of the team such was the margin of victory. Bigger challenges will have to be overcome v Meath, Kildare and Westmeath if Carlow hope to win this title.

WHILE TWO French teams were going through their gladiatorial business in the European Cup final in Paris on Saturday, Tullow's Irish international flanker Sean O'Brien was leisurely directing barbeque business at a friend's home. It is welcome downtime for one of the latest recruits to the international scene, although a broken leg playing for Leinster earlier in the season cost him a place in the Ireland squad for the forthcoming tour of New Zealand and Australia.
