WHAT SHOULD have been the sporting experience of a lifetime turned out to be a veritable nightmare for Carlow athlete Leona Byrne. For two years the former Youth Olympics competitor toiled and trained to help qualify Ireland for the women's two-person bobsleigh for the Winter Olympics, only to be forced to watch her colleagues race on television from the Olympic Village.

AN INCREDIBLE run in the All Ireland Schools basketball competition ended for the Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach U16 girls team this week in Thurles were they were defeated by Cork's Christ the King School 27/48 in the All Ireland league semi-final.

On Thursday February 5, Institute of Technology Carlow, awarded 46 Sports Scholarships to promote and foster sporting talent in the college. The Sports Scholarships were presented to students in a variety of sports including hurling, camogie, gaelic football, badminton, soccer, basketball, rugby, swimming, volleyball , rowing, martial arts and athletics.

Carlow Car Club held their AGM and Club Championship prize giving in the Lord Bagenal Hotel recently. There was a large turn out of both new and existing members on the night.
