Relentless Wexford attack penetrates Carlow defence
Tuesday March 09 2010
CARLOW FACED a huge challenge against Wexford 1sts who are currently the team to beat in the South East League.
Carlow held off Wexford for the first 20 minutes of the first half with Susan Willis and Sara Ashmore strong in defence. Carlow's Sinead Doyle playing in goal (a new member to the club this season) had a superb game and was kept busy throughout the game with some great saves off Wexfordís sticks.
Mid way through the first half Wexford broke down the Carlow defence and got a goal from open play, five minutes later Wexford capitalised on a poor clearance from Carlow's defence and they slotted home a second goal. Carlowís defence had to work very hard to keep Wexford from adding to their 20 score heading into the second half.
Wexford piled on the pressure with great passing strokes which enabled them to hold onto a lot of possession for the second half. This paid off and 10 minutes in they scored another goal from open play.
Carlow started to work the ball up the pitch and put some pressure on Wexford forcing them to make mistakes but the defence held firm and they were quick to clear the ball from their circle.
The last 10 minutes of the game was marked by relentless Wexford attack with their determination on Carlow's goal paying off when Wexford's Jean Devoy rounded her opposite player and a free run into the circle to put home another goal for the home team. Wexford finished the game strongly helped by a succession of errors by Carlow giving Wexford ample opportunity at goal from penalty corners.
Carlow defended well towards the end with Sinead Doyle saving some great shots at goal with the help from Natasha Collins.
Carlow were forced to play a defensive game and worked hard and played well as a team despite the end result.
Carlow welcomed many new members to the club this season and two of these new members ( Susan Willis and Sinead Doyle) had great performances on Sunday.
Susan is a young and talented player developing great skill as a defensive player. Sinead Doyle is an outstanding player in all aspects of the game and is a great addition to the Carlow team.
