League success for St. Abban's
Tuesday August 24 2010
THE CURTAIN came down on this year's senior track and field programme with the Woodies DIY National league final which was held in Tullamore. Having qualified for the Premier men's division final in 8th spot anything better was a bonus especially with Paul and Declan Byrne both missing due to ill health.
Valuable points were hard earned by Francis Egan in 100m, Richard Oghe Aghe 200m & 400m, Stephen Attride 1500m and Christopher Buggy 400m hurdles, William Kelly shot & discus, Barry Pender javelin, and Conor Daly pole vault.
Aidan Kelly had a seasonal best when he finished 3rd in the hammer, Seamus Fitzpatrick was 2nd in the 56 lbs, Eoin Kelly was 4th in the 110m hurdles, 2nd in the long jump with 6.70m and was one of three winners on the day taking the triple jump. Barry Pender was also top of the pile winning the high jump while Brian Kelly had an excellent run to take the 800m title.
When all the points were added we were in 7th place with Clonliffe clear winners and very little separating the remaining clubs. Well done to everyone on a fine display!
Territt's the man
John Territt bagged a double silver in the National Masters championships in Tullamore. Competing in the M3 category he was 2nd in both the javelin and discus.
Magazine feature
The current issue of "The Irish Runner" magazine has a feature on St Abban's club - the magazine is available in most newsagents.
Sympathy
The sporting fraternity were deeply saddened with the sudden passing of one of life's sporting gentlemen the late Pat Fitzgerald from Cushina, Portarlington who was predeceased by his wife Mary just 5 weeks ago. Having attended the National masters championships in Tullamore on Sunday, where he was in brilliant form and reminisced with several athletes he had officiated for down through the years, it was difficult to understand that he had gone to his eternal home by lunchtime on Monday.
To his daughters Mary and Brid Ann and sons Mick and Pat along with his extended family we offer our sincere sympathy from all in St. Abbans.
National half marathon
Athletes from all over the country will arrive in Monavea on Sunday the 5th September for the National half marathon.
