MARCUS LAWLER has won the 2009 All-Ireland juvenile Athlete of the Year for Carlow after a distinguished season on the track, and will be presented with his award in Arklow on March 20.
The young Carlow sprinter - son of a former all-Ireland champion Patricia - nailed the award when winning the 60 and 200 metres titles in the schools international in Cardiff; his 60 metres time of 7.25 just 100th of a second outside the meeting record, and a personal best for the Irish team captain who was representing Carlow CBS on the team.
Last weekend in the Leinster championships Marcus won the 60 and 200 metres while sister Grace (12) won the 60 metres in a personal best of 8.23 and they won the 60/200 and 60 respectively in Ulster three weeks ago. They will compete in the all-Ireland indoors championships in Nenagh on March 27/28.
It has been a great year for Marcus who set a schools record of 22.80 to better a time set 33 years ago.
