Elaine is crowned U-17 squash champ

Tuesday February 16 2010

ELAINE WARE the 16 year old from Carlow was crowned Irish Squash National Champion U-17 at the finals held in Mt. Pleasant squash club on Sunday.

In reality, she was a very comfortable winner of her age group and indeed could possible have won the U-19 title if she so wished. Victory here means she will lead the Irish U-17 team at the forthcoming European Squash Championships which will be held in Prague next May and she now joins a unique group of players who have made a clean sweep of all four Provincial Opens and National titles in one season.

For another of the young emerging stars from Carlow LTC Squash it was heartbreak for Casey Luther who was defeated in the final by Róisín Ó Shea from Galway. Casey will take some consolation from this as she now goes to Irish No1 under 13 as she defeated Stephanie Ryan Dublin in the semi-final.

Shaun Hennessy just about clinched 3rd place in the boys U15 event following a 3/2 win over Oisin Logan Dublin in a match which never sparkled. Henenssy had assured his place on the Irish team for the Home Internationals by virtue of making the 3/4th place in these championships.

In the girls U-11 Klara McDermott had a terrific tournament finished 3rd losing out on the runner-up place when she lost 3/2 to Ellie Wright and also U-11 was Jack Doyle and he too secured 3rd place defeating Frankie O'Dee 3/0.

Seamus Harmon could only manage 4th and this could damage his chances of making the Irish U-19 team when it is selected. Ryan Luther should have defeated Rob Barnes Belfast for 9th/10th place in the boys U-15A and Declan Saruwatari finished a good tournament in 4th place in the boys U-15B event and Cian Doyle put in some good performances to finish 7th.

Katelyn Doran clinched 3rd place in the U-19 girls with Jim Kenny 7th in his section. The U15 girls where Carlow had 3 competitors Niamh O'Keefe 6th, Jemma See 9th, Rebecca Mc Dermott 5th was very competitive.

Shiela O'Keefe continues to show improvement and she can be very happy with her 7th place finish U-13.

In the U-17 sections Cathal Hennessy produced another set of good results with a 6th place finish and Fiona O'Keeffe took 4th place in the girls she improves with every tournament.
