Carlow defeat Enniscorthy in last league game

Tuesday February 23 2010

CARLOW set out to finish this year's league with a win but it was a hard fought game that could have gone either way. Carlow started the first half using most of the possession and creating chances but like so many other games Carlow just could not put away any of those chances.

Enniscorthy did well in defense to deny Carlow any goals during the first half. Carlow grew increasingly frustrated and began making mistakes which allowed Enniscorty to open up the midfield and create many chances of their own. Just before half time Enniscorthy thought their hard work had paid off as they blasted the ball into the net from a short corner but the ref was quick to disallow it as the ball was raised too high. It was a lucky escape for Carlow.

For the first fifteen minutes of the second half Carlow were under pressure and were forced to play a defensive game. Susan Willis and Justine Collins were both solid in defence and managed to hold off Enniscorthy with the help of Laura Byrne and Joyce Mahon.

The last ten minutes of the game Carlow perked up and started creating chance after chance again . Carlow forwards Leanne Lambert and Sarah Fingleton linked up will together to create many great passes into the circle but unfortunately they were just short of finding a Carlow stick. There were many wasted chances where Carlow had an open goal but missed the mark.

However, just before the end of the match Sinead Doyle took a shot which the keeper saved but only managed to clear it as far as Lisa Walshe who wasted no time in putting it into the back of the net to give Carlow a 1-0 win.

Carlow start the 1st round of the Cup against Wexford 1st on the 28th February.
