Royal victory for U-18 side
Tuesday July 27 2010
CARLOW U-18 Camogie team continued their winning way in the second round of the All Ireland Minor Camogie Championship at Deerpark (O'Hanrahans GFC) on Wednesday last. The game was in the balance right up to the final whistle as Meath dominated in the closing minutes and but for a sterling performance by the Carlow backs might have stole the game. A late goal won the match for Carlow. They now travel to play Kildare on Wednesday for round 3.
Carlow started briskly and dominated in the first half but the forwards did not register scores. At last Ann Murphy opened with a point from play followed by others by Eleanor Treacy and Susan Williams. The significant score of the half came after twenty minutes from a speculative shot into the Meath square by Margaret Murphy and as hurleys clashed the sliothar found the net. Meath replied with a pointed free. Half time score Carlow 1-3 Meath 0-1.
Meath were the livelier team for most of the second half as the Carlow backs, led by player of the match fullback Maria Kehoe, repelled several attacks on goal. Goalie Niamh Curran, Michelle Kelly, Jillian English and Kate Nolan were also to the fore. A Carlow break led to a Sara Jane Burke point and Meath replied with two - game on. However, Margaret Murphy pointed a free and Meath replied. With five minutes to go Ciara Quirke, quick as a flash, pounced on a low ball and steered it into the net to give Carlow a victory.
Carlow Scorers: Margaret Murphy 1-1, Ciara Quirke 1-0, Ann Murphy, Eleanor Treacy , Susan Williams, Sarah Jane Burke 0-1 each.
