SPOTLIGHTING the hurlers for retaining the Ring Cup and winning a place in 2010 Leinster and McCarthy competition, Carlow GAA chairman Pat Deering reviewed a year of considerable note in many areas at Saturday's GAA convention in Bagenalstown.

The Rathvilly club member highlighted the 125th exhibition as the notable off-field undertaking as well as the function to honour the hurling and football teams of 1962.

The hurlers, he continued faced challenges which must be met if Carlow is to aspire to higher levels and he thanked Kevin Ryan and his team for their contribution to the Ring victory.

'Our football teams, although not very successful during the year, are in my opinion, in a very good position to progress next year with excellent foundations in place. This progress will not be possible unless we get total commitment from all parties involved and I would appeal to clubs to make their players available for county duty in the coming year.'

He was pleased with the progress in finding a fixtures balance between club and county in '09 due to better inter-county fixtures programming, improved local fixturing and the improved attitude of Carlow clubs.

He stressed he benefits to be gained from the proposed Centre of Excellence to be sited near Fenagh. 'This project will be the biggest ever undertaking by the association in the county. While some have reservations about it we must move forward and provide adequate training facilities for all our county teams. It is a project we just cannot afford not to do.'
