REAMS of newspaper in recent times has been devoted to the trials and tribulations of former Clare hurling manager Mike McNamara and his Limerick counterpart Justin McCarthy, who is clinging on to his job for dear life.

However, while both Mike Mac and Justin can happily return to their day job, sadly for Carlow hurling manager Kevin Ryan the day-job is soon to be no more. A Production Manager with ABB Transformers in his native Waterford city for the past six years, the company gave their employees six months notice in October, so Ryan will be clocking out for the last time in March.

Having worked 16 years as a carpenter, then another 13 with Rexam in the city, Ryan, a married man, has ridden out previous recessions and is determined to so again, actively on the look-for employment.

Kevin's strong belief in a hard work-ethic would be as asset to any would-be employer.

His commitment to Carlow has been outstanding, each journey for training involving a round trip of 120 miles, leaving the outskirts of Waterford at 5.30, not back home, on some occasions until 11 o'clock.
