NAOMH BRID 8-01 MISEAL 2-03: FITTINGLY as Carlow U-12 hurling took its final curtain call in scenic Kilbride on Thursday evening the stage was adorned by a troop of excited and talented hurlers who put on a wonderful show for the enthusiastic audience. As this was the last competitive game in this age-group for the foreseeable future, nostalgia attached itself to the fixture and many of the older spectators present remembered the fact that it was St Fintan's and Parnells, two forerunners of Naomh Brid, who contested the first ever U-12 B final back in 1984.
The undoubted star of the show deadly right corner forward Jamie Doyle who finished the game with a massive personal tally of 5-1.
Doyle's first half goal, coupled with 1-1 from full-forward Michael Sheeran gave the champions a 2-1 to 1-2 interval lead, Myshall having hit the front early on courtesy of a Aaron Morris goal (following a huge Daragh McDonagh delivery) and a delightful Damien Jordan point.
The same Damien opened the second half scoring with a terrific catchand-strike long range point and one point remained between the sides until the maroon magicians pulled a goalspree out of their bag of tricks in the closing ten minutes .
Rat-tat-tat goals in the 12th, 13th and 14th minutes of the half from the hot sticks of Jamie Doyle (finishing off a stinging David Cox shot), Doyle again (a bullet) and Dylan Kavanagh (an out of the hand pile-driver) virtually finished the game as a contest. A superb Damien Jordan catch-and-strike yielded a goal that handed his side a life-line, However, Leighlin parish boys finished strongly, Jamie Doyle rattling the road end net with two further strikes while to Dylan Kavanagh fell the honour of scoring the last ever U-12 hurling goal.
