'AN ALL IRELAND medal is every Camogie player's dream and this game will be the biggest day in the sporting lives of the players and also their mentors, families, clubs and counties'.
This was the message from Camogie President Joan O'Flynn in the programme for the all Ireland 'C' Championship Final Played at Clane GAA Co. Kildare last Sunday. Indeed it was a memorable match where every girl gave of their best to win the honours and All Ireland title.
Carlow, playing with the wind, started the game on the attack with Mary Ellan Doyle and Margaret Murphy in command without yielding a score. A Laois free from 40 yards by centrefielder Sarah Ann Fitzgerald found the Carlow net after a deflection. Carlow continued to press forward with Edel Fenlon and Collette Malone trying hard.
They were rewarded with a point by Ciara Quirke after a pass from sister Niamh. Sarah Ann put Laois further ahead with a good point from play. Katie O'Byrne made two good saves from Laois pressure before Carlow's Ann Murphy pointed to reduce the deficit. Laois replied per Sile Burke with a point. Carlow got their just reward for good play by their half back line of Emma Kelly, Tara Wilson and Kate Nolan when a free from 35 yards by Margaret Murphy found the Laois net just on halftime Carlow 1 – 2 Laois 1 – 2.
Carlow started the second half with a bang when after 1 minute and 20 seconds Niamh Quirke had the sliothar in the Laois net from a pass from Amy Skelton following good work by Lorraine Bible. An invigorated fullback line of Grainne Nolan, Michelle Kelly and Shauna Barcoe repelled Laois attacks and Ciara Quirke pointed after a pass from Ann Murphy – Carlow 2-3 Laois 1-2 fifteen minutes into the second half.
Laois, however, dominated the last quarter and responded with a handful of scores – a free from Sarah Ann went to the Carlow net, a goal from play by Dawn Mortimer, a point by Rachel Boyhan, followed by another by Dawn Mortimer and Sile Burke got a final point – Laois 3-5 Carlow 23.
Sarah Ann Fitzgerald was awarded 'player of the match' when she pipped Grainne Nolan for the honour.
Laois and Carlow will meet again in the U-18 Leinster Championship – a game eagerly awaited.
