The pinnacle of any club golfer's year is the Captain's Prize and for the Captain it is also the high point of his year in office. Robert McHugh has been an outstanding member of the club for many years, how gratifying then that we had a great turnout for his much sought after prize.
Leaders from the qualifying round were Billy Byrne with a score of 66, Ned Cremin on 68, Hugh Doyle and Martin Donegan Jnr. on 69 with a host of players on 70. Sunday morning's weather was o ercast and ery humid, play started at 10.30 with the final groups teeing off at 2 pm. The early marker was set by dark horse Colm Cooney posting 143. veteran of many Captain's Prizes Tony Doran playing off a handicap of 7 threw in a 142. Then it was the turn of our President Jim Byrne following up his previous score of 70 with a magnificent 68. While all this was happening Fergal Doogue posted the round of the day with a 74 gross playing off 4. Raymond Danne holed a great putt on 18 for birdie to post 139. Billy Byrne leader from the first day got a ery tricky putt on 18 for a 72 to go with his 66-we have a play off! Jim Byrne on 138, Billy Byrne on 138!
The captain wished both players well and set them on their way for a sudden death play off to play 12, 13 and 18. A great crowd followed the two ball, witnessing steady golf in a ner e racking experience for both players and supporters, with Jim just pipping Billy on the last. A quick look through the history books sees Jim as the first sitting president to win the Captain's Prize in our club! A nice piece of history for Gentleman Jim.
On Sunday night a huge crowd joined Robert and his family for the presentation of prizes. In his Captain's address Robert welcomed his sister Geraldine, remembered his late father Joe and thanked his beautiful wife Paula and family for their support. He gave special thanks to the course staff for the magnificent condition of the course, not alone this weekend, but for the whole year. He thanked Richard Lynch for all his hard work as competition secretary and Owen Cooney for his great work in doing the leaderboard for the last 22 years! He ga e special mention to our PRO Brendan Doogue (who I might add is on holidays!) for the extremely hard work he has done in promoting the Club and who has also been the architect behind our ery successful open weeks over the past two years! Our ice Captain Fran Quaid and his team were given special credit for the extensive work they have done in and around the clubhouse. He also thanked our catering and bar team for their quality, service, and efficiency.
