Waters' remarkable return an inspiration to his team-mates

Tuesday July 27 2010

THERE WAS no broader smile in Dr. Cullen Park on Saturday than that of Joe Waters whose remarkable recovery from cancer last year has been a contributory factor to Kilbride's new-found force. The big No. 8 was a tower of not only strength, but inspiration, and an example of a rare determination to beat his health 'opponent' also.

"Marvellous, marvellous," chirped Joe who admitted that the players felt optimistic about their assignment, even though they were not as impressive in shading St. Patrick's by a point in their opening game.

"We're playing as a team now and have everyone on board, but they're good players and always have been; it was just a matter of getting it all together," he added.

And he has no fear of facing Kildavin-Clonegal on Saturday, but the time of our conversation he was not aware that Seamus Gray would be sidelined with a hamstring injury.

"I feel great, and I'm looking to get back onto the Naomh Eoin hurling team too," he continued, beaming with his new lease of life after a very trying recovery course which had many doubting his return to the games.

None of the Palatine players we attempted to speak with after the game would oblige.
