Treasurer reports surplus of €66,190 for past year

Tuesday December 15 2009

' IT WAS a great achievement in a very difficult financial year,' was how Carlow GAA treasurer Michael Meaney termed the ¤66,190 surplus for the combined county board and Dr. Cullen Park Committee accounts at Saturday's county convention in Bagenalstown, and especially at a deficit of €14,529 the previous year.

He also paid tribute to the Friends of Carlow GAA who had to operate in a poor financial climate, but he made special mention of the disappointing ¤ 1,800 from the NHL compared to the ¤ 99,000 brought in by Kilkenny which they could invest in extensive coaching.

He said that the reduction in county team expenses from ¤ 730,685 down to ¤ 452,791 could be explained by the halt in training in November and December and the Ring Cup starting a month earlier.

A noticeable ¤14,000 increase in expenditure was the financing of the 125th exhibition and the '62 team's celebration, which 'was money well spent.'

John Scott (Tinryland) queries the increase in fines which increased by 30 per cent, and he had a problem with a referee citing a team for being six minutes later which meant an increase in fine from ¤20 to ¤40. 'I cannot understand people who would do that.'

The treasurer explained that the increase in fines was not for late fielding but the ¤1,500 fines on two clubs and fines for breaches of sideline regulations about bibs and numbers of club members on the line.

The chairman told Seamus Brennan (Naomh Brid) that Carlow would receive money from Croke Park rents to other codes and events, but they would not receive that ¤250,000 until they had reason to draw it down. 'It will go towards the Centre of Excellence for which there will be other monies also.'
