THE OLD cliché 'a game of two halves' fits this intermediate football championship game like a glove, as the alarm bells were ringing for the Fighting Cocks in the first half at Ballon on Friday evening as Mt. Leinster Rangers second team were in complete control leading by 0-5 to 0-1 at half time.

"YOU WOULDN'T see as many goals in the World Cup," was the quip of one fan exiting Rathvilly where, given the hosts' wastefulness and the visitor's resilience, a draw was probably the best result to this MFC contest.

Old Leighlin on song against poor Fenagh

OLD LEIGHLIN last year's defeated county finalists may have been sluggish last week when they lost to Tinryland by three points in the opening round, let there be no mistake they came in to the second round on Saturday evening at McGrath Park with all guns blazing as they brushed aside the challenge of Fenagh in the Michael Lyng Motors senior football championship. This was a teak tough physical championship encounter some of the tackles over the border, two players one from each side seeing the bright red card at different times, and one or two more players from each side were lucky they didn't also get the ticket for an early shower. Old Leighlin produced one of their best team displays for a long time, and when they scored their first goal, at the end of the first quarter they took over and dominated the game. Fenagh opened the scoring with a Gary Dillon pointed free, followed by a neat Pakie Fleming shot as they led by 0-2 to 0-1 after eight minutes

THERE WAS no broader smile in Dr. Cullen Park on Saturday than that of Joe Waters whose remarkable recovery from cancer last year has been a contributory factor to Kilbride's new-found force. The big No. 8 was a tower of not only strength, but inspiration, and an example of a rare determination to beat his health 'opponent' also.

Q I recently set up a company with a friend. We were both made redundant and went into business quite quickly and I now have a few concerns. What would happen if either of us were to pass away? I don't want to fall out with his family, or vice versa, should something like this happen. A Congratulations on setting up your new business. Redundancy is a difficult situation and it sounds like you and your friend have taken a positive step forward. I understand your concerns, as this is certainly an issue that needs to be addressed very early on in the life of the business – by you and your friend.

A RESILIENT St. Mullins side had to come from three points in arrears to force a draw with Grange in this lively intermediate football championship encounter at McGrath Park on Friday evening last. Grange were moving nicely and had chalked up four points courtesy of Niall Byrne, Ciaran Pender, Cillian Murphy, before Michael Kehoe with a well worked goal for St. Mullins brought them right back in to contention after nineteen minutes, and a Sean Gahan point left them trailing the blue and white Grange men by the narrowest of margins at the break Grange 0-5 St. Mullins 1-1.

THOUGH he holds a special place in Carlow's Gaelic football history Kevin Maher has, for over 70 years now, been confined to the role of unsung hero. Indeed until news broke that Carlow IT were hosting the 2008 Sigerson Cup the said Mr Maher hadn't even a Christian name?! All we knew, from a study of the indepth Third Level GAA records, lovingly compiled by Cormac McAnnallan's brother, was that a K Maher, who won a Sigerson Cup medal with UCD in 1935, was the only native of Ireland's second smallest county to have pocketed a coveted Sigerson memento.

SO, WE have begun the business end of the domestic football season, and not with any particular pizzazz.

THIS WAS not even a good training session for Kildavin-Clonegal in Dr. Cullen Park on Saturday; the most one-sided SFC match so far and surprising in how the Tullow team had pressed Kilbride in their opening round, losing by only a point.

NAOMH EOIN had a facile win over Clonmore in the quarter final of the less than 21 football championship at Spellman Park on Wednesday last. On the way to the game the winners were expecting a battle royal, as any game between the sides is always close and three years ago at minor level, it went to a replay.

CLONMORE and Leighlinbridge opened the 2010 intermediate football championship at McGrath Park on Friday last and what ever about recent league form, this game had the real championship cut. Scores on each side were slow to come by with the defences on top particularly in the opening half.
