A SUGGESTION from Naomh Eoin that Carlow consider swapping referees with other counties, for league and championship games, was not greeted with universal accord at Saturday's GAA convention, although it was passed as a recommendation.

Chairman Pat Deering informed delegates that wheels were in motion at Leinster on the idea but Martin Barry said the suggestion was not received favourably by Carlow or indeed Wexford referees. 'We have to get our own on board before we consider swapping.'

Tommy Murphy, moving the recommendation, said their idea was to help Carlow referees. 'We have very good young referees coming through but we cannot put them into big games too soon,' adding that all heir senior referees are not available all at the same time.

New Youth Officer Liam Foley felt if they wee to swap hey would have to bring their own referees up to standard before going to other counties.

The chairman felt the problem in Carlow was familiarity with referees often officiating at several codes in which the same players are playing.

Kieran Kelly told convention that referees 'were totally against it' at one of their meetings, especially with the travelling involved.
