GRASSROOTS

Tuesday February 16 2010

St. Patrick's (Tullow): Since he first arrived in Tullow in 1961, Paudric Cunnane played a major role in GAA activities, as a player, coach and administrator. His arrival coincided with a golden era of Tullow football and he quickly became immersed in the local GAA scene, especially with the old vocational school where he coached many teams tirelessly.

The fruits of his labour were seen in 1972 when the Carlow Vocational team won the All-Ireland final. This was backboned by many players attending school in Tullow. It is also worth noting that the same team were part of the St. Anne's side (a Tullow-Grange-Rathvilly combination) which won a minor title in 1972.

Pauric was also a member of the St. Pat's intermediate team which won the Championship in 1972. He served the club for many years and filled many officership posts. For many years, he was chairman of the club. In 1983 he was a selector when St. Pat's won their only under-21 championship and was also involved in the background team when the club regained senior status by defeating Nurney in the 1987 intermediate final.

He was also involved in various County teams. Pauric served as selector for the Carlow under-21 team which reached the Leinster final in 1984 and worked with the senior team as a selector in the late eighties. He worked with manager Patsy Ryan in 1988 when Carlow played Dublin on a very wet June Bank Holiday Monday in Dr Cullen Park, the first time a senior Leinster Football Championship match was played on a Bank Holiday.

Throughout the eighties and early nineties Tullow Community school dominated the Leinster Vocational Championship and after near misses in 1987 and 1989 they were finally victorious in the All-Ireland final, where they beat Boherbue from Cork on the never-to-be-forgotten day in Clonmel. The joyous scenes at the final whistle showed how much everyone appreciated the many years of effort that Pauric had put in to achieve this feat. He continued his involvement with various school teams up to his retirement.

Pauric was a selector with the Carlow Ladies team which won the Leinster final and qualified for the All-Ireland semi-final and when St. Anne's Ladies team was established he was on hand to offer help and advice and experience. Pauric was a most able administrator and served the County Board as vice-chairman, Irish and Youth officer and also as Chairman of Coiste na n-Óg.

The club extends its sympathy to his wife, Bernie, daughter Cliodhna ,sons Donnacha, Niall and Pauric.St Pat's G.F.C. owes a lot to Pauric's legacy and wouldn't it be the ultimate tribute to Pauric's hard work if this was to be the year in which the club re-established itself as a major force once more in Carlow GAA.
