SCHOOLS OUT for Summer but to-day we stroll down the corridors of academia to confer legendary status on two men who hold a unique place in Carlow GAA history, our only Sigerson Cup and Fitzgibbon Cup medal winners.
The Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup are the blue riband events of Third Level football and hurling. Once the preserve of the traditional Universities (Cork, Dublin, Galway and Belfast), the competitions are now open to all third level educational establishments.
Since their inauguration way back in the early part of the last century the Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup's have produced an abundance of top class fare as the various college teams, drawing their resources from all over the country, would be on a par with the strongest inter-county sides.
It was in the Sky Blue of UCD that Kevin Maher (1935 Sigerson) and Tom Nolan (1960 Fitzgibbon) wrote their names into the history books.
