A look back in time - a great period for hurling and football

1962 All Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship FROM THE late fifties until the mid sixties Carlow Hurling enjoyed a great passage in hurling history, culminating in winning the all Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship in 1962 and going on to contest the Leinster senior hurling championship semi final of 1963.

At Dr. Cullen Park: Carlow Westmeath. At Croke Park: Carlow Dublin ( 2). At Newross Carlow 2-11 Kilkenny 2-3. At Birr Carlow 3-9 Galway 2-5 All Ireland Semi final.

September 11th 1962: At Croke Park - Carlow 6-15 London 3-3. All Ireland Final: Pat Somers was the captain and was presented with the All Ireland Intermediate Cup.

Ned Doogue was captain of the senior football team. 1961/62 National Football League

After contesting the 1953-54 National Football League Final defeated by League Specialists Mayo in April,54. The game became known as "The Flying Doctor" when Mayo flew home Dr. Padraig Kearney to mark the great Andy Murphy.

Carlow were out of the highlight for a few years after that, although they did contest the Leinster senior football championship semi final of 1958.

However by the Fall of year 1961 Carlow gave notice that they were on their way back.

October 28th 1961 at Tralee: Carlow 2-8 Kerry 0-10. Two goals by Eamonn Long and Ned Doogue gave Carlow the advantage. Kerry went on to win the 1962 all Ireland final.

November 5th 1961 at Dr. Cullen Park: Cork 1-9 Carlow 1-5. February 18th 1962 at Wexford Park Carlow 2-11 Wexford 1-5.

March 4th 1962 at Dr. Cullen Park: Carlow 1-9 Kildare 1-5

At the end of the group Carlow were level with Cork on six points each, so there was a play off with Cork at Croke Park. March 11th 1962 at Croke Park: Carlow 2-9 Cork 1-6: Pat Brophy scored Carlow's two goals, and it was also Carlow's last major win at Croke Park. This win put them in to a divisional final with Waterford (quarter final)

March 25th 1962 at New Ross: Carlow 1-9 Waterford 2-3. Sunday April 15th 1962 at Croke Park. National Football League semi final: Down 0-13 Carlow 2-5.

Two great goals from Carlow's full forward Ned Doogue on Down full back Leo Murphy enabled Carlow to lead at half time. however the reigning All Ireland champions fought back to win by two points. Michael O'Hehir broadcast the game on Radio Eireann and He said "It was great to see Carlow back in the big time."
