TWO STUDENTS who attend Tullow Community School have had their tireless work for the community honoured by a prestigious American award.

Aideen Fleming, a sixth year student, and PJ Ronan, in second year, were both presented with an AllIreland Pramerica Spirit of Community Award last week and are now among the 20 finalists who are competing for the top prize of a trip to the USA where the international category will take place.

Aideen and PJ were presented with certificates of achievement by Ciarán McCormack, Chairperson of the Principals and Deputy Principals Association while later this month, they'll attend a gala ceremony in Cork where they'll receive ¤500 and an engraved silver medallion.

Aideen was selected for her volunteer work at the Cheshire Home, as a helper on the Lourdes pilgrimage, and for her many and varied fundraising activities including much fundraising for the new Daniel Delany School in Ghana.

She's not only the Carlow Lion's Young Ambassador but also their Regional Ambassador. She will sit her Leaving Certificate in June and hopes to continue her volunteer work as she pursues a career in nursing.

PJ was selected for his determination to help fulfil his brother's life-long dream of working in an orphanage in Calcutta. PJ took it upon himself to raise over ¤4000 by bag packing, organizing no uniform days at school and by using his DJ skills for local events. He is also a member of the Green Schools Committee and a representative on the Student Council and is always ready to give a helping hand when needed.
