NEW CARS taxed in Carlow for the month of January dropped dramatically on last year, according to new figures for vehicles registrations released.
The figures are in contrast to reports from local dealers and to figures released from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, which has reported a much-welcome jump in sales numbers.
Toyota and Ford again went head to head this year and both were the most popular cars of choice for buyers as 22 Toyotas were snapped up this January, compared to 27 last year along with 22 Fords, compared to a similar 27 this time last year.
In Carlow there were 186 new private cars registered with the local authority compared to 213 last year and of these 22 are Toyota, 22 Ford, 25 Volkswagen, 15 Renault, 13 Hyundai, 12, BMW, 11 Peugeot, 8 Opel and 8 Nissan, 7 Skoda, 7 Volvo and 7 Mazda, 6 Audi, 4 Seat, 3 Honda, 3 Mercedes Benz, 3 Vauxhall, 2 Mini, 2 Mitsubishi, 2 Kia, 2 Subaru and 1 Saab.
Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) count the number of new private cars registered in Carlow was similar to figures from 2009. In the county 27 second-hand private cars were registered compared to 55 in the same month in 2009.
Across the country figures show that the number of new cars licensed in January fell by 4.8 per cent compared to the same time last year. The CSO says a total of 10,469 new cars were licensed during the month of January, down 527 from the 10,996 licensed the same time last year.
Surprisingly there were no new Fiats or Citroens registered in Carlow, and not so surprisingly we didn't register any new Austins, Dodges, Chryslers or Porches. There were also no new Alfa Romeos, Daewoos, Daihatsu, Jaguars, Jeeps, Land Rovers, Lexus, Rover, Smart, Ssangyong or Suzuki.
