SUNSHINE and ploughing made for a good day out in Rathoe on Sunday when a vintage ploughing competition took place.
Local farmer and All-Ireland ploughing champion Bertie Murray was one of the organisers behind the event and he said he was pleased with the turn-out.
It was the first ever vintage ploughing match to take place in the area without being held alongside a modern ploughing event, and ploughmen travelled from all over to compete in the fields belonging to Austin and Barbara Maher.
Mr Murray has been ploughing since 1988 and has six All Ireland champion titles under his belt.
He was beaten in the trailer class by Willie Murphy of Wexford and Tommy Cullen from Wexford came in third.
In the single furrow competition Carlow farmer James Pender took first place and his father Tom came in second. The hydraulic class was won by Mossy Fleming from East Cork, John Somers from Carnew took second and Brian Kelly from Borris was third.
