CAR SALESMAN Simon Pender is finding a greater demand in the market for second-hand cars.

He established himself with over 11 years ago in the motor industry when he set up an independent dealership in Shamrock Business Park in Graiguecullen.

The last few months of 2009 were extremely quiet, he said, but fortunately things are now on the up.

'The last few months at the end of the year were very, very quiet,' he said. 'I found here that those months were desperate but things picked up in January.

'In the last four or five weeks people have been out pricing and looking a lot more. People were afraid last year – they didn't know what would happen – but they are starting to come out and price things now.'

He has found that people now want to purchase a car that will go the distance and last for a number of years.

'People want a car that will last a good few years. In the past they thought they would change it every year but now I find they are going for cars from 2006 to 2008, something that will last.'

Mr Pender is finding the busier market in the purchase of second hand cars.

'I find I am selling second hand cars the whole time.

'The scrappage scheme has brought a renewed interest also, it has got people out looking again.'

Depending on the car you want the government pays money out on the scheme when motorists purchase a new car. The amount the customer gets depends on how low the car emission is.

'I don't sell that many new cars but I find a lot of people are coming in and asking about the scheme. It is great to see a bit of interest.'
