Motorist is jailed after his fourth insurance conviction

Tuesday March 09 2010

A CRETTYARD man was jailed for four months when he was convicted of driving without insurance for the fourth time.

22-year-old James Ryan of Doonane Hill was jailed for three months and disqualified for six years for driving without a licence at Clonmore, Killeshin on March 10 last and he was convicted and fined ¤400, sentenced to four months and disqualified from driving for six years for driving without insurance on the same occasion.

Solicitor Brendan O'Flaherty sought an adjournment in the case as his client claimed he never received the garda summons.

Garda Cormac Sheridan said that when he called to the home of the accused to summons him he was told Ryan was at bingo.

'At no stage did anyone state that he didn't live there,' he said.

Judge William Harnett was told that the defendant has three previous convictions for driving without insurance.

'My client says that he wasn't staying at that house but they did eventually catch up with him,' said Mr O'Flaherty.

He added that Ryan has done his junior certificate and worked for a time as a grounds man but is now considering moving to Australia to start a new life.

He pleaded for a suspended sentence but Judge Harnett said he felt Ryan had flouted the law too often.
