Man tried to punch Garda through patrol car window

Tuesday November 10 2009

A CARLOW MAN who signalled a garda patrol car to stop and then began abusing and attempting to hit a garda through the passenger window was handed a three month sentence.

24-year-old Gareth Coakley of 44 John Sweeney Park, who is already serving an eleven month sentence, was back before the court charged with being drunk in public and threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour in John Sweeney Park on May 24 last.

Garda Michael Morris said he was driving the car in the estate when the defendant signalled him to stop. Coakley then approached the passenger side of the car which was down and began shouting abuse.

'He called us pigs and f**kers', said Garda Morris. He added that Coakley then attempted to hit his partner Garda Awylward through the passenger window.

A number of people were in the area at the time and when the gardai went to arrest the defendant a number of his friends dragged him in to his house.
