A MAN escaped with his life after an arson attack on a car left his home engulfed in smoke in the early hours of Sunday morning. Two cars were set alight on Montgomery Street in Carlow, one of them in close proximity to the Academy Court flat complex.
With flames licking around the flats, a man escaped unhurt from the complex just as the fire service arrived.
'This was a potentially serious incident,' said chief fire officer Ger Guerin. 'The car was set alight against the building and extensive damage was done to the windows and walls.'
Two units from the fire brigade battled the blaze which was prevented from spreading into the complex. The residents of the ground floor flat, which was badly scorched and smoke damaged, were not at home during the incident. Gardaí are investigating a motive for the arson attack.
