Liberty Tree to be sold but monument will remain intact

Tuesday February 09 2010

THE LIBERTY Tree in Carlow town is to be sold to a developer as part of a deal between his company and Carlow Local Authorities. At a meeting of the county's councillors yesterday, Monday, County Manager, Tom Barry said that the transfer of land at Plás na Saoirse to Dolmen Estates Ltd would be instrumental in settling no less than four high court cases that Dolmen Estates are bringing against them.

Mr. Barry endeavoured to assure the councillors that the monument to the 1798 rebels, known as the Liberty Tree, would remain intact, even if it meant that it was to be moved elsewhere in the town.

'The important thing is that this settles four high court cases,' he said. 'The preservation of the monument is tied into the agreement.'

However, some councillors expressed concerns about the handover of the town centre landmark.

Cllrs. Denis Foley, Des Hurley and William Paton, voted against the transfer of lands at Plás na Saoirse before the proposal was passed by a majority vote.
