CARLOW learned with horror on yesterday (Monday) of the tragic death of a popular 27-year-old woman who was due to be married next year. Mary Peare from the Bellefield Road area of Enniscorthy in County Wexford died in a road accident near Whitemills pub close to Ballon at around 8 a.m.

The well-liked dental assistant was on the way to work as usual at Barretts dental surgery in Pembroke when her car skidded on black ice on the N80 road near the pub.

News of the tragedy was broken to parents Willie and Joan Peare by Gardaí who called to their house on Monday morning. The devastating news was broken to Gavin Kelly, fiancé of the deceased, at his place of work in Camolin, Co. Wexford.

Meanwhile, efforts were being made to locate Mary's brother William Peare, who lives in Australia.

The awful tidings in the run-up to Christmas drew the sympathy of friends and neighbours for her parents. She is from a well-respected and hard-working family.

A quiet and petite young woman, she was engaged to be married to her boyfriend and neighbour Gavin next summer. The couple had bought a house in Enniscorthy, not far from where they both grew up.

The collision involved Ms Peare's Toyota Yaris car and a 4x4 jeep. She was the sole occupant of the car and driver of the jeep was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be serious.

The road was closed for a forensic collision examination and reopened around four and a half hours later at 12.30 p.m.
