THE PART resurfacing of a laneway at the back of Pairc Mhuire caused controversy among councillors on Thursday.

Cllr Tom Dermody said he felt the residents were being mislead by information circulated by the council informing them of resurfacing work that will take place. He said there are only enough funds to partly redo the laneway.

Town engineer Ray Wickham said it was proposed to include the lane in this year's programme of road works as ¤5,000 had been allocated for the work.

'This will do about 100 to 120 linear metres,' he said.

Cllr Dermody said he had received a number of calls from residents wondering which area will be worked on.

The money was from a discretionary allocation from County Councillor Denis Foley who chose to spend his money here after the matter had been raised by Cllr Ken Hickey.

'There are 85 houses there and they have been mislead,' said Cllr Dermody after he had been informed that work would start at no. 70.

Cllr Arthur McDonald asked if further funds could be allocated to carry out the remainder of the work.

'It looks bad on us if we do one section and we can't finish it,' he said.
