BAGENALSTOWN Town Council said farewell to the last remaining lady around the table on Thursday as town clerk Nicola Lawler resigned from her post.
She has held the position of Town Clerk in Bagenalstown for the past two and a half years but is stepping down to explore different avenues.
'It was a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience,' she said at the end of the meeting. 'It was a great learning experience also.
'The community spirit and the enthusiasm of the residents was something I really noticed here at the beginning.'
She said it had been a pleasure to work with the local councillors and wished them all the best in the future.
Chairman Denis Foley noted that she was the last remaining lady in the house.
'You are one of a line of capable women who have left the post, is it Arthur or Denis?' asked Cllr Liam O'Brien referring to the last director of services, Bernie O'Brien.
Cllr Arthur McDonald, who was chairman of the council last year, was quick to reply that Ms Lawler had been happy during his term.
Director of services Séamus O'Connor thanked her for doing such a good job: 'The handling of the elections and the budget wasn't easy and she will be a hard person to follow – well done.'
Cllr Arthur McDonald informed the members that the new town clerk, Michael Brennan, will be joining them in a couple of weeks. He wished Ms Lawler well. 'When I was in the chair I found her to be very conscientious. I feel she was better than any other town clerk that I worked with.
'It is a pity that we are losing her and it's Bagenalstown's loss. I hope you go on to bigger and better things.'
Chairman Denis Foley wished her all the best also.
'I want to thank her on behalf of the town council for her work.
'I always found her to be very good at her job and very effective. I want to wish you all the best with your new venture.'
