DISCUSSIONS are to get under way about extending the cemetery in Bagenalstown.

Cllr Arthur McDonald said he had been approached by a land owner willing to sell an area on the right hand side of the graveyard.

'It would be a good time to purchase land,' he suggested. 'We should send a letter to the graveyard committee and let them know that Carlow County Council is looking to purchase additional land and extend the graveyard.'

Town Manager Seamus O'Connor said he would ask the environmental section to examine the suitability of the site.

'In a year or two the graveyard will be full,' warned Cllr McDonald.

Suggestions were made around the council table about locking the gates at certain times as a number of headstones and kerbing were damaged by cars and trailers.

Cllr David O'Brien said he would be totally opposed to locking the gates as it is not 'practical or feasible'.

Cllr Tom Dermody raised the issue after being contacted by a number of locals over the damage but Mr O'Connor informed him that there is no restricted access in the cemetery.
