Carlow woman's story features in 'Forgotton Maggies'
Tuesday September 08 2009
THERE WILL be a special screening of 'The Forgotten Maggies', which features a Carlow woman who spent two years in a Magdalene Laundry, in the SGC Cinema in Dungarvan this Sunday evening.
'The Forgotten Maggies' features Maureen O'Sullivan (57) who was placed in a laundry located in the Irishtown in New Ross.
Maureen's unforgettable contribution details her horrendous time in New Ross, before she was moved to another laundry in Athy. After a further two years in Athy, Maureen eventually escaped and moved to London, before arriving back home to Ireland 30 years ago.
The documentary is the brainchild of 25-year-old Stephen O'Riordan from Cork, who was overwhelmed by Peter Mullins' award-winning film 'The Magdalene Sisters'. He set about producing 'The Forgotten Maggies' as a continuation of 'The Magdalene Sisters'. This is his first film type documentary and primarily looks at the lives of four women, three of whom were forcefully placed in Magdalene Laundries
Kathleen Legg (78) decided after 60 years of never telling her late husband or her family, to finally let her story out. Mary Collins (42) spoke on behalf of her mother who was locked away for 27 years in a Magdalene Laundry at St. Peacock's Lane in Cork and Mary King (69) like all the others decided once and for all enough was enough.
'It's very raw and sometimes emotionally challenging. However, what is does do is show and tell the sincere understanding we had for these women and willingness to fight against both Church and State and the impact this has on a wider audience,' explained Stephen O'Riordan.
The documentary will be screened at the SGC Cinema in Dungarvan at 7.30 p.m. For bookings contact INFO on 1520 927 010 as spaces are limited.
