THIEVES STOLE a safe containing cash collected for the victims of the Haiti earthquake and drank all the communion wine during a break in at St. Mary's Church in Bennekerry.

A horrified Fr. Tom Little, parish priest of Bennekerry, said he couldn't believe that 'someone would stoop that low' following a break in at St Mary's Church on Saturday night.

The culprits broke a side window in the church to get inside before they ransacked the sacristy and stole a safe containing the donations. They took also the money from the collection at the candles and they drank all of the church wine.

A wheelie bin was used to transport the safe but the thieves couldn't get it open and abandoned it.

'People are just so annoyed that someone could do this,' he said.

'They tried to carry the safe off but they ended up just leaving it out in the yard.'

'I can't believe that someone would stoop so low to rob money from the house of God.'

Gardai are investigating the incident and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

'Luckily the collection was still in the safe,' said a spokesman for the gardai.

'They gained entry through a rear window and then opened the doors from the inside.'
