Accountant didn't file his own tax returns

FINED ¤700 IN COURT

Tuesday March 09 2010

A 62-YEAR-OLD self-employed accountant was fined €700 last week in Carlow District Court for failing to file his own tax returns.

David Nolan, 6 Strawhall Villas, Athy Road, Carlow, was fined for two counts of not filing the returns, on November '03 and November the following year.

'It's a case of the shoemakers children going barefoot,' Judge William Harnett observed when he heard what Nolan's occupation was and that he'd had a previous conviction on the same charge.

Solicitor Michelle Tracey told the Judge that her client had fallen on hard times and was struggling to keep his business afloat.

Judge Harnett then said that even though services that accountants provide are always popular during times of recession, they still found it difficult to get paid for their work.

Nolan was then fined ¤700 which had been mitigated down from ¤3,000.
