Today's climate has meant a changing role for FAS which now focuses on up-skilling people who turn to the centre for help.

A range of options are available through the office at Hanover including work placement for unemployed graduates and people without third level qualifications, community employment schemes, apprenticeship and traineeships.

'With the work experience, if the economy changes and conditions improve they could be kept on by the company,' said Con Quinlan, FAS manager.

' This has happened for some people but if not they are still gaining experience and they have the opportunity to build contacts and network.'

The work placement for unemployed graduates is for nine months and allows participants to maintain their social benefits.

The second strand of the scheme, for people with third level qualifications, is targeted at people who want to gain experience in areas like block laying and carpentry as for periods from two to nine months.

'We've another option and that's the community employment scheme.

It's for nineteen and a half hours each week and participants are paid an allowance,' he added. 'We also run apprenticeship courses and traineeships.

'A lot of people, particularly graduates need something on their CV after finishing college and this is a chance of getting nine months work experience.'
