400 apply for just one job

MORE THAN 400 people sent CVs to Carlow County Council when it advertised a general operatives job. The council was inundated with application forms for the post that includes general maintenance and manual work on sewers, water mains and roads.

The job saw one of the highest number of people seeking a position as the applications arrived in their hundreds to the council buildings on the Athy Road.

' We received more than 400 applications,' confirmed senior executive officer of Human Resources Michael Brennan. 'It is the climate that we are in. In these recessionary times more people are looking for work.

Duties of a general operative are general manual work, on a weekly pay scale of ¤544.70 to ¤567.90.
