COMMUNITY GAMES: There were some excellent displays by Bennekerry/Tinryland competitors at the 2nd weekend of the National Community Games Finals in Athlone IT Co. Westmeath last weekend.
Special mention must go to Marcus Lawlor (Boys Under 16 100m) and his sister Grace (Girls Under 14 100m) who Gold Medals in their respective sprint finals in fine style on Sunday last and are surely following in the footsteps of their mother former international sprinter Patricia .
It was an excellent weekend for Marcus who also helped the Bennekerry/Tinryland Boys Under 16 Relay team which also included Gavin Curran, Cian Lawlor, Conor O'Brien, Shane Webb and Adam Murphy to Gold medals ahead of Enniscorthy and Westport in their final.
Grace Lawlor also anchored the Girls Under 14 Relay team to bronze medals behind winners Donegal and Horeswood of Wexford in their final. Roisin Byrne, Ashleigh Farrell and Sarah Farrell also starred as members of this relay team.
There was also a very good performance by Robert Crowley who secured a magnificent silver medal in the Boys Under 12 600m event behind winner Adam Donoghue of Castleisland.
TENNIS CLUB
The Tidy Towns group and The Tennis Club trustees are working in partnership to develop the Tennis Club grounds (2.125 acres) as a community amenity area. The area is in a derelict condition at present, and improving it would greatly enhance the appearance of the village, and also provide a welcome recreation area for all.
It is hoped to include the following: Resurface the tennis courts, Create an astro - turf pitch Construct a playground for children, Design an amenity/walking area for seniors. This is phase 1 of this ambitious project which will require some serious funding, so it is hoped that all parishioners will offer their support and encouragement.
