HUNDREDS OF tillage farmers who attended a National Tillage Conference in Carlow were urged to work together in order for their sector to survive the current economic climate.

Attracting farmers from all over Ireland, the conference, which was hosted by Teagasc, was a significant event in farmers' diaries as experts from the sector addressed pressing topics.

The opening sessions were chaired by James Burke, Chairman of Teagasc in Oak Park during which the audience was addressed by a fellow tillage farmer, Michael Hoey.

Mr. Hoey said that everyone involved in the tillage sector, from research and development to marketing and producers, should unite together in a national plan during the recession.

He added that the plan should incorporate a long-term vision of where the sector is going and should be designed to be as productive as possible.

Talks were given by Carlow Teagasc Research Centre experts Michael Hennessy who delved into the subject of Share Farming while Eugene O'Sullivan and Steven Kildea addressed the top of triazoles and their effects on crops.

John Spink, Richie Hackett and John Finnan, all from Carlow's centre, spoke about such topics as fungicides, management practices and bio-energy.
