HALF MARATHON
Athletes from all over the country will arrive in Monavea on Sunday next the 5th September for the National Half Marathon. With over 300 athletes expected the parish lap will be a busy place for a couple of hours with the race starting at 1 pm.
Anyone interested in entering for the event should complete entry form available in the clubhouse and return to headquarters.
TERRIT THE MAN
John Territt bagged a double silver in the National Masters championships in Tullamore recently when he competed in the M3 category he was 2nd in both the javelin and discus.
CLUB FEATURE
The current issue of the Irish runner magazine has a feature on St. Abbans Athletic Club and is available in most newsagents.
ROUNDERS BLITZ
A Mixed Rounders Blitz will take place on the Eire Og GAA Pitch on Saturday 4th September at 1.00pm. There will be six teams battling out for the Saplings Challenge Trophy. Also there will be an exhibition American Softball Game by two Dublin based teams.
It should be a great day of sport. All are welcome, Adults/teenagers €3, children are free. Light refreshments served. Proceeds go to the Saplings School for Children with Autism.
ST ABBAN'S AC
Three in a Row for Conor: Conor Daly brought the curtain down on his Community Games involvement with another gold medal performance in Athlone over the weekend. The defending champion in the high jump, having won the U.14 hurdles in 2008, Conor entered the competition at 1.60m with an easy clearance. Having 1st time clearances at 1.65m and 1.70m he had the competition won and secured his 3rd gold medal in a row. He proceeded to 1.80m which again he cleared 1st time and had two very good efforts at 1.85m which he will be striving for over the next few weeks in the combined events. Clubmate Craig Coffey representing Carlow was 5th in the high jump, while James Moore representing Arles had a fine run for 15th place in the marathon.
Saragh Finishes 6th: Saragh Buggy continued her travels when visiting Bedford in England for the English AAA championships. In a closely fought triple jump competition Saragh had to settle for 6th place in the on this occasion.
Fast times on a Beautiful Evening: Friday evening saw the Laois Sports Partnership sponsored road race over the "M3" Monavea course record some fine performances as the beautiful evening made it very favourable. Club members to feature among the prizes included:-John Quinn, Mick O'Connor, Brian Kelly, Kevin Brennan, Teresa Agar, Colette English, Breda Mulcahy, Pauline Doyle, Margaret Davis, Kelsey Warburton and Hannah Carbery. Just over 80 completed the lap. Thanks to everyone for supporting the event.
National Half Marathon: Sunday the 5th September sees the staging of the National half marathon on the traditional parish 10K circuit over 2 laps commencing at Burkes at 1 o'clock and finishing on the track at various times throughout the evening. A large number are expected to turnout with several enquiries from afar re accommodation. You are welcome to join in and show your support anywhere along the route.
