Graigue folk getting busy
Graiguecullen residents picked up their paint brushes to add a splash of colour to 98th Street and remember some favourite local characters recently.
A group of locals got together to paint an unsightly hoarding at the end of the street and left behind a masterpiece of pictures, colour and messages that tells tales of fishing along the Barrow.
Carlow Town Council erected a number of hoardings around Graiguecullen and to brighten the area they invited locals to get involved and paint the hoarding.
The Community Mural Project is an initiative of Carlow Town Council and is being supported in Graiguecullen by the RAPID Co-ordinator and the Graiguecullen Community Development Group.
A group of people from the local community have been meeting over the last month and with the support of artist Adam Bohanna they agreed on a design for a Community Mural for the hoarding at the end of 98th Street.
' The people who have come to the meetings have really participated they have shared their ideas as well as their stories about the history and the characters of the area, Tucker Ward, Biddy Byrne, Willie Doogue and Bomber Nolan to mention a few,' said a spokeswoman for the Rapid Project.
The mural tells tales of fishing on the River Barrow remembered by the residents including the Lock-keeper Michael Webster, Corcoran's, the Boot, Blade and Beet factories, days long gone - 1798, Carlow Castle and Sleaty parish.
' The meetings were really interesting and fun with everyone learning something new about the neighbourhood around 98 Street,' she added.
More colourful paintings will appear around Carlow in the coming weeks as plans are in place to paint hoarding at Carlow Regional Youth Services and St Fiacc's Football Club have agreed to paint the other two hoardings in Graiguecullen.
