A live War of Independence-era grenade has been made safe by an army bomb disposal team.

The device was discovered in field in Cloneygowan in Co Offaly on Thursday.

A Defence Forces spokesman said the team was called to the scene by gardai, who sealed off the area.

The team arrived at 12.15pm and made the Mills grenade safe.

"The grenade was removed to a safe location and destroyed, and the scene was declared safe at 12.50pm," he added.
